Becoming Jane (PG) starring Anne Hathaway, James McAvoy, Maggie Smith, Julie Walters.

Becoming Jane examines the life of one of Britain 's best-loved female authors. But if this film to be believed, Jane Austen's life had a much more direct influence on her work.

Jane believes in love but her parents want her to marry for money and in 1795 England that was the way of the world for a young woman. But when the 20-year-old meets the dashing young Irishman, Tom Lefroy, his intellect and arrogance ignite Jane's curiosity and the scene is set for a will-they-won't-they love/hate romance as they engage in a battle of wits and witticisms. Can Jane afford to spurn the offer of Lady Gresham's nephew, defy the authority of her parents and fly in the face of social convention?

Austen purists may turn their noses up at some of the liberties taken, but thanks to the combined charm of the leads and sterling support from exactly those actors you'd expect to find in any Austen adaptation, this is an agreeable cinematic portrait - beautifully-shot and dryly funny.
