OBDG LogoChurch Fete 14th July

Come and see us at the Church Fete! We will be having a fiendish natural history quiz for the ‘grown-ups’ whilst children can get hands on and hopefully identify some very strange bits and pieces. Prizes to be won! We’ll also have lots of information on the group and other wildlife organisations and topics.

Butterfly Walk 15th July

Tony Baines, our resident butterfly expert is leading a walk on Sunday 15th July from Colt Hill along the canal to a veritable hot spot for butterflies on Odiham Common near Bagwell Lane. On route we will look at Broad Oak Meadow and Wilk’s Water. If the weather is kind we should see Meadow Browns, Marbled Whites and maybe even Silver-washed Fritillaries. Do wear stout footwear as the ground will be rough and uneven in places. Meet at 2.00 pm at Colt Hill (Odiham) Wharf. Cost £1.

Hedgerow Survey

Wendy and Carol have now copied the maps of the parish and drawn the squares to be surveyed. The next stage is to identify the sample section of hedges to be surveyed and ask permission of the landowner - then it’s out into the fields! If you missed the training day don’t despair, we will be working in pairs, so we can team you up with someone who has been trained!

Flora Surveys 12th July

We are meeting in the Churchyard at 10.30 am on Thursday 12th July, when Tony Mundell will complete the second flora survey. Later that morning we will go on to the Cemetery, but Tony has kindly offered to spend the rest of the day in Odiham, so we will be surveying Broad Oak Meadow in the afternoon. Do join us if you can – one can learn a lot from a professional botanist!

Farm Visit

We had a fascinating evening at Lodge Farm. Robert and Duncan Janaway gave us a very informative talk about the way the farm is run and David drove us around the farm to see for ourselves – including the impressive dung heaps! We ended in the shop with wine and home produced beef rolls, courtesy of Judy and team.

Forester Moths and Purple Emperors

72 Forester Moths were counted in all the southern meadows of Odiham Common at the end of May – testament to the success of Steve’s management regime.

Purple Emperors are also present on Odiham Common but rather more difficult to see. Tony Baines has offered to take a small group in the next week or so, to Alice Holt Forest near Bentley where the males assemble in all their glory. If you would like to see them please call Tony on 07801 522932 or [email protected]

Moth Evening

Despite the torrential downpours during the day, it remained dry during the moth evening and the moths didn’t disappoint. We saw at least 43 species of macro moths (we did have four experts present!). Commoner species included two Elephant Hawk-moths which are quite large and a beautiful pink and green colour and several acrobatic Swallow-tailed moths. More unusual was a Rosy Marbled and an Orange Moth. Other large moths included a Pine Hawk-moth and a Lobster!

Garden Surveys

As we are nearly at the end of the second quarter, please don’t forget to send in your garden survey results, and let me know if you need forms for the third quarter.
