Douglas Leonard Jens Smith, 14th January 1931-21st May 2006

by otmg on Sunday 4th June

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Doug Smith, President of Odiham and Greywell Cricket Club. One of the longest serving and most respected club members having been associated with Odiham in many capacities.

In his earlier years, he was an enthusiastic player whose greatest pleasure was to captain the Sunday 2nd XI, otherwise known as The Moles in recognition of the regular visitors to the club's former ground at what is now part of the Odiham bypass.

Doug was instrumental in establishing the Colt's section of the club and with the running of four junior sides, his award of the Colt of the Year Cup is still eagerly competed for.

As a publisher, Doug Smith was the principal in penning and having printed a history of the club from its foundation in 1764. At the time of his death, he was in the final stage of updating this history, a task the committee now hopes to complete in his memory.

More recently he took much pleasure in accepting the club presidency, an honour that was well deserved.
An undoubted highlight of his term of office came in 2003 when his President's XI was represented by the England Women's XI on a day which will be long remembered by players and spectators.

Doug Smith's death marks the end of a long and happy association with the club, and a suitable commemoration of his individual service to the club will be held later in the season.

If anyone would like to donate towards the cost of a bench in Doug's memory, please contact the Chairman (Peter Fountain) on 01256 702128.
