Local Boys Shine At Amey's Copse (Hans Taylor Wins Clubman Class)

by otmg on Thursday 20th April

At short notice the go-ahead Mortimer club fitted an extra meeting into the already crowded AMCA classic fixture – and what a good decision it turned out to be. Last Sunday's classic scramble at the usual venue at Bennetts Hill, near Reading, beat the weather and the prophets of doom and became a personal triumph for Gerry Allen and his merry men who kept everything – nearly 100 solos and 21 sidecars – to a tight schedule of three blocks of racing plus a Le Mans-type race for solos and a handicap for sidecars.

Before the end of the meeting the rain appeared, but by then the leading riders and the sidecars had made their considerable mark in conditions that were on the 'soft side of good'. Leading the solo charge were local riders Adrian Cox and Tom Willoughby, and Alan Wright. While Rick Cole and Kevin Mullins were dominant amongst the chairs.

A poorly supported Pre-Unit class was won by Roger Dunford after his main opposition, Chris Castles had bike trouble, a fate that also befell him in the Pre-60 class. In the latter, Chris romped away with the first race, but thereafter it was a contest of consistency between Bryan Smith and Rob Griffiths, a contest which ended in favour of the Wandering Welshman. The main drama of the day came in the ever-popular Unit Construction and Up to 250cc classes. In the former, a titanic struggle between Adrian Cox and Alan Wright was always on the cards, although I am not sure that Wrighty fully appreciated the quality of the opposition. He won the first race, passing Adrian Cox on the last lap but in legs two and three he had to make do with second best, for Adrian, who spent a big chunk of last season on the injured list, hit top form which included being left in the pits when his bike wouldn't start, missing the start of the race, but still he passed a surprised Wrighty on the last lap. It seems as though Adrian is back to something approaching his best form and a good omen for the new season.
